Introduction: Depression and anxiety disorders contribute to the global disease burden. Ursolic acid (UA), a natural compound present in many vegetables, fruits and medicinal plants, was tested in vivo for its effect on (1) enhancing resistance to stress and (2) its effect on life span. Methods: The compound was tested for its antioxidant activity in C. elegans. Stress resistance was tested in the heat and osmotic stress assay. Salvia officinalis is used as a dietary supplement with diverse medicinal activity (e.g. antidiabetic and antiatherosclerotic effects). Effect of selected triterpenoids on chronic dermal inflammation.

The activity of four natural triterpenoids on a 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate multiple-dose model of skin chronic inflammation was studied. Erythrodiol and ursolic acid were significantly effective. The most important features concerning structure-activity relationship and previous data on the effect of these triterpenoids on other inflammatory conditions are discussed.

Oleanolic and ursolic acids are two ubiquitous isomeric triterpene phytochemicals known for their anticancer activity. A set of derivatives of the two compounds with a modified oxidation state and lipophylicity at C-3 and C-28 positions, were prepared and tested as anticancer agents versus the lines HepG2, Hep3B and HA22T/VGH of hepatocarcinoma, a strongly aggressive tumor that is not responsive toward the standard therapies. Danshen, the dried root of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (Lamiaceae), is one of the most commonly used traditional Chinese medicines for cardiovascular indications. In EA.hy 926 cells, a cell line derived from human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), an aqueous extract of danshen, and also a methanol extract of the plant, increased eNOS promoter activity, eNOS mRNA and protein expression, as well as endothelial NO production. New ursolic and betulinic derivatives as potential cytotoxic agents.

Fifteen new ursolic and betulinic triterpenoids, bearing various functionalities at C-3 and C-28 were synthesized as potential cytotoxic agents. All compounds were obtained by a hemisynthetic route via ursolic and betulinic acids. Preliminary screening of these compounds on human HT 29 colon cancer cells revealed inhibitory activity for three of them. Beta-D-Glucopyranosyl-3beta-hydroxyurs-12(13)-en-28-oate 1c, 3beta-3-(3-pyridyl)-prop-2-enoyloxyurs-12(13)-en-28-oic acid 1i and the potassium salt of 3beta-cinnamoyloxylup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid 2d demonstrated cytotoxic activity in the micromolar range: 8.0, 45.0 and 8.0 microM, respectively.

The purported effects of "circulation-improving" herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) show striking similarities with the vascular actions of nitric oxide (NO) produced by the endothelial NO synthase (eNOS). We have previously reported that Salviae miltiorrhizae radix and Zizyphi spinosae semen upregulate eNOS expression. The glycosides were characterized by spectral methods as martynoside, isomartynoside, verbascoside, isoverbascoside, betonyoside F and isobetonyoside F, the latter being a new natural product.
